Downtown Playas del Coco is a practical base for exploring northern Guanacaste, with beach access, restaurants, shops and boat excursions close together. Whether it suits a holiday or a longer stay depends on the particular neighbourhood, the activities you enjoy and your budget.

Where Playas del Coco is
Coco is on Guanacaste’s Pacific coast in the Carrillo area. Liberia’s international airport is a useful arrival point, but allow for your actual route, traffic, weather and luggage collection when arranging transport. Do not plan around a guaranteed airport-to-beach time.
Arrange the transfer price and meeting point before travelling. If renting a car, check the location of your accommodation and its parking arrangements rather than assuming everything described as “Coco” is walking distance from the centre.
Exploring downtown
Start with the main commercial area and beachfront, then explore at a comfortable pace. Confirm the opening hours of shops, pharmacies, restaurants and services you specifically need. Pavements, shade and accessibility vary from street to street.
For a longer stay, visit the area around a prospective rental in daytime and evening. Proximity to restaurants can be convenient, while music, traffic and deliveries may matter if you prefer quiet surroundings.
The beach and swimming conditions
Coco is a bay used for recreation and boating. Water clarity, waves and conditions can change; neither a calm-looking surface nor the presence of other swimmers establishes safety.
Ask lifeguards or appropriate local personnel about current swimming areas, avoid boat-launching routes and river mouths, and follow warning signs. Keep valuables secure while swimming. For more guidance, read our rip-current safety article.
Restaurants and evening plans
Compare current menus and choose a place that fits your preferences and budget. Restaurant prices, entertainment schedules and opening days change, so check directly rather than relying on a fixed count of businesses or an old price list.

Diving, fishing and boat excursions
Discuss the exact destination, weather policy and required experience with the operator. A nearby excursion and a trip to more exposed offshore sites can involve very different boat journeys and conditions.
For diving, confirm certification requirements, recent experience, equipment, supervision and cancellation terms. Wildlife sightings and underwater visibility cannot be guaranteed. For fishing, ask about applicable permits, the species targeted and handling practices before booking.
Budgeting for a longer stay
Build a budget from current quotations for the home and lifestyle you are considering. Include rent, utilities, internet, transport, groceries, insurance and activities. Ask for recent electricity bills from a comparable property, especially if you expect to use air conditioning often.
Compare the same rental dates and included services. A nightly holiday rate, a long-term lease and a property advertised for sale answer different questions. An attractive asking price is not evidence of a reliable rental return.
Renting or buying property
Inspect the property and neighbourhood, confirm water and internet service, and read the written terms. For a purchase, use an independent Costa Rican lawyer to check title or concession status, restrictions, debts and permits, and arrange a qualified building inspection.

Is Coco a good fit for you?
Coco may appeal if you want shops and dining near the beach and access to boat activities. If quiet, a particular swimming beach or a rural setting is your priority, compare several locations in person before committing to a long stay.
