Duty-free shopping in Golfito can be worth considering when buying appliances or household goods, but compare the total delivered cost before making the trip. The Depósito Libre Comercial de Golfito is a specific shopping facility with registration, allowance and product-restriction rules.

Register before shopping
JUDESUR directs visitors to register in person at the Golfito customs post. Bring valid identification: its guidance specifies an identity or residence document for Costa Ricans and residents, or a valid passport for foreign visitors. Adults can shop; a Costa Rican residence card is not a universal requirement.
Can you shop on the same day?
Yes. JUDESUR says you can enter and shop once you obtain the card. Its current guidance does not require an overnight wait. Allow time for registration and shopping, and check holiday arrangements.
Purchase allowance and restrictions
The official page lists an authorised amount of ₡1,848,800, equivalent to four base salaries. Check your available balance and product restrictions through the customs post, participating shops or Hacienda’s Golfito system before choosing goods.
JUDESUR also describes combining rights among eligible close relatives with supporting documentation. Confirm eligibility and paperwork directly; do not assume any two shoppers can pool allowances.
Opening hours
The published schedule is Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m., and Sunday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Consult the official calendar for exceptions.
Compare the exact products
Make a list of model numbers before requesting prices. Two appliances with similar names may have different dimensions, energy use or warranty coverage. Compare a written quote from Golfito with current offers closer to home.
Ask whether the quoted amount includes all applicable charges and what payment methods are accepted. A duty-free label does not establish a particular percentage saving, and it should not replace a price comparison.
Delivery and after-sales service
For large goods requiring transport, JUDESUR directs shoppers to authorised transport services inside the facility. Agree on the delivery address, cost, timing, responsibility for damage and unloading arrangements in writing.
Measure doorways, stairs and the space where the appliance will be installed. Ask who performs installation and where warranty service is available. Keep the invoice, model details, serial number and written warranty.
Work out whether the trip pays off
Use this calculation: price near home minus the Golfito price, minus travel, delivery, lodging and installation costs. Include the value of your time if that matters to your decision.
For example, a lower shelf price may provide little benefit if special delivery and an overnight stay absorb the difference. A trip already planned to the southern zone creates a different calculation from a dedicated shopping journey from the Central Valley.
Plan the journey
Check the route and current conditions before leaving. Allow a comfortable travel margin rather than relying on a fixed driving time, and avoid making the return journey while tired. If combining shopping with other activities, confirm when goods must be collected or dispatched.
