Work Permit for Costa Rica

A work permit in Costa Rica must match the activity you intend to perform and the immigration authorization you hold. Before accepting employment, starting paid services or changing an employer, check your approved category and its conditions with DGME. A job offer, company registration or residency application receipt should not be treated as proof that the work is authorized.

Identify the activity and your current status

Describe the employer or clients, actual duties, place of work, payment arrangement and proposed start date. Keep your passport, immigration resolution and any current authorization available for the assessment. Receiving income and performing work are different questions; do not assume a foreign payer settles the immigration treatment of an activity.

Choose the applicable DGME category

DGME publishes separate categories for specialized employees, qualifying work on one’s own account, executives and technical personnel, as well as special categories. The requirements for one should not be copied into another. Explain the specific employment arrangement and ask which published checklist applies.

DGME’s permanent-residency page states that granting that status permits remunerated labor or intellectual activity. That immigration statement does not replace any separate professional, business or employment requirements. For temporary or special categories, review the actual resolution and conditions rather than assuming every resident has the same permission.

For specialized work on your own account, read the self-employed category guide. Ownership of a business alone does not answer which work you may personally perform.

Prepare a category-specific document file

  • Confirm the precise application and whether employer participation is required.
  • Ask which employer, position, qualifications and experience evidence is required.
  • Use the applicable DGME instructions for identity, civil and criminal records.
  • Confirm document authentication and translation before ordering services.
  • Check each requested signature, certification, date and name for consistency.

Our general residency document guide is background for preparation, not a replacement for the employment category’s checklist. Confirm any labor-authority or professional-registration requirements separately.

Applicant organizing work permit documents at a Costa Rica home office

Working remotely from home in Costa Rica

A home office changes the work location, but it does not by itself establish immigration permission. Describe whether you are an employee, contractor or business owner, where the employer or clients are based, and what services you actually perform. Ask DGME which category and conditions apply before relying on a foreign payment account or an overseas contract.

DGME lists Estancia Trabajador Remoto (Nómada Digital) separately among its Trámite Ya procedures. Review that specific stay category through the official DGME page; do not assume it is the same as resident status or that any temporary resident may perform all remote work. Tax, professional and business obligations require separate review.

Keep the approval and permitted activities with your work records. If you change from foreign clients to local clients, or change the work itself, obtain a fresh assessment of the applicable permission.

Fees and processing time

Ask for a breakdown of applicable government payments, document preparation and any professional assistance. Do not apply a single price from a different immigration procedure. Use the current official instructions and retain payment receipts.

This guide does not promise approval within a fixed number of weeks or months. Keep your filing reference, follow up through the official channel and respond to requests for further information. An application in progress does not by itself confirm a start-work date. Consult the application tracking guide for organizing the stages.

While an application or renewal is pending

Ask DGME to clarify whether your existing authorization remains valid for the proposed activity and dates. Do not infer permission from a receipt, appointment reservation or employer’s expectation. If the employer, duties or category changes, confirm the required procedure before relying on the old authorization.

Read the approval resolution, complete the requested documentation steps, and record renewal deadlines. Keep work authorization, health-insurance enrollment and professional licensing as separate checks.

Finding an employer is a separate task

A vacancy is not evidence of immigration sponsorship or approval. Ask the employer what it requires and whether it will participate in any necessary application. Our job-search guide links to public employment services and practical questions to ask.
