Produce markets and neighborhood shops
Ask locally about the location and opening day of the nearest feria del agricultor. A neighborhood shop may also be useful for a small purchase when a larger shopping trip is unnecessary. Compare quality, ripeness and quantity as well as the price displayed.
Ask whether produce is priced per unit, bunch or kilogram. Buying more is only good value if it can be used or stored. Where to find organic products and markets
Yes, Costa Rica has markets offering organic products. One starting point in San José is Feria Verde’s own website. It lists the Polideportivo de Aranjuez and Saturday hours of 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., checked September 7, 2026. Its range includes organic agricultural products alongside prepared food, crafts and other goods. Check the organizer’s current notice before traveling, and ask individual vendors about the product you intend to buy.
A farmers’ market, a local product and an organic product are not interchangeable descriptions. A stall’s presence at a particular market does not, by itself, establish certification for everything on sale.
How to ask about organic claims
Costa Rica’s Servicio Fitosanitario del Estado organic-agriculture unit maintains the registration and oversight framework for organic plant producers and processors. Ask who produced the item and what certification or registered system supports the organic claim. The SFE also describes participatory certification, which involves producers and consumers and is intended for the domestic market. Do not assume that only one type of third-party certificate can apply.
- Ask whether the specific item is certified organic, in transition, or simply locally grown.
- For packaged goods, read the producer and product information rather than relying on the shelf label.
- At a produce stall, ask about the farm, the product and the evidence supporting its description.
- Confirm stock and payment options before a special trip.
For other towns, ask the local market organizer or agriculture office about available producers. Avoid treating an old nationwide directory as a current opening-hours list. How to compare grocery costs fairly
Build a small list of items you regularly use and record the same brand, size and quantity at each store. If you are comparing different pack sizes, divide the price by weight or volume. Include membership, delivery and transport costs when they affect the decision.

For dietary needs, read the actual product label and ask the manufacturer if essential information is unclear. Do not assume a product meets an allergy requirement because it appears in a specialty section. Bring reusable bags and arrange suitable transport for your purchases.
