U.S. Social Security retirement income may support a Costa Rica Pensionado application when the actual pension and its documentation meet DGME’s requirement: a lifetime pension of at least US$1,000 per month, certified by a competent authority. Do not assume that every payment or document issued by Social Security establishes that requirement.
DGME’s Pensionado checklist and SSA’s benefit-letter guidance were checked on 7 September 2026.
Start with the type and duration of the benefit
DGME requires evidence of a pension received on a lifetime basis, with a monthly amount of at least US$1,000 or the stated colón equivalent. Review the actual award rather than relying only on the amount deposited into your bank account. If a benefit has a review date, time limit or other condition, obtain clarification from the issuing authority before assuming it meets the lifetime-pension standard.

How to get a U.S. benefit verification letter
SSA provides a benefit verification letter service. Use the official SSA instructions and your own personal my Social Security account to obtain the proof available for your benefits. The letter is personalized to the person’s benefit status; obtaining it does not itself mean DGME has accepted the evidence.
- Open SSA’s official benefit-letter page and follow the current account instructions.
- Obtain your letter and check your name, benefit details and monthly amount.
- Compare it with DGME’s requirement for certification of a qualifying lifetime pension.
- If the document leaves an important point unclear, ask the issuing authority how to obtain accurate supporting certification.
- Confirm the applicable authentication and translation process before preparing the filing copy.
For a pension paid by another institution, request certification from the authority responsible for that pension. A bank’s record of deposits should not be assumed to replace the document required from a competent authority.
Authentication and Spanish translation
DGME’s Pensionado checklist says a certification issued abroad must be legalized and authenticated or apostilled. Its general instructions address the Spanish translation of non-Spanish documents. Confirm which formalities apply to your particular document and issuing authority. An online printout should not automatically be treated as ready for an immigration filing.

If the amount or wording is unclear
Check the certification’s payment amount and duration against the published standard. If you have several awards, changes in payments or deductions, have the evidence reviewed for your actual case. This article does not assume that a particular combination, account balance or private withdrawal plan qualifies.
Ask the pension authority to clarify the facts of the award. Do not edit an official letter yourself. DGME decides whether the submitted evidence meets its requirements.

Plan everyday expenses separately
The immigration income minimum is not an estimate of what your household will spend. Prepare a separate budget for housing, transport, healthcare arrangements and reserves. Work, travel, banking and renewal questions also require their own checks; they are not answered simply by having a pension letter.
