Costa Rica DIMEX Renewal Fees: How to Check Your Amount

There is no single renewal total suitable for every Costa Rica DIMEX holder. DGME’s renewal guidance says the amount varies by case and should be confirmed when arranging the appointment.

Identify the procedure before paying

Specify whether you need renewal, first documentation, a duplicate of a still-valid card, or a new category application. Those are different procedures. Give the office your category and expiry date so it can confirm the correct amount.

Do not use an initial residency application fee as if it were a DIMEX renewal total. Likewise, an old payment receipt from a friend may relate to a different category, date or service channel.

Separate the charges

• Immigration payment: the rights payable for the actual procedure.
• Service charge: DGME describes an additional charge at BCR or Correos, confirmed when booking.
• Late amount: if applicable, have the office confirm the period and calculation.
• Other costs: documents, authentication, translation or professional services are separate from the immigration payment.

How to check your renewal amount

1. Use the official DGME page to identify the renewal category and authorized service route.
2. Ask the appointment office for the current charge, currency and payment timing for your record.
3. Confirm the applicant name that must appear on the receipt.
4. Check whether a late charge or extra procedure applies.
5. Keep the instructions and proof of payment with your appointment records.

BCR payment timing

For the renewal categories listed on its page, DGME says that applicants attended at BCR should not pay the immigration renewal charge in advance: it is paid when the photograph is taken. DGME describes the payment in colones. Confirm the office’s instructions rather than guessing an exchange rate or copying account details from an old blog post.

Its general guidance says the additional BCR or Correos service amount is confirmed at booking and payable in cash on the appointment day. Ask which payments this covers and what receipts you will receive.

Late renewal is more than a fee question

DGME lists a US$3 late amount per month or fraction in its permanent-resident guidance. The precise situation and procedure matter. For some overdue temporary-category cards, the published list requires a new category application after more than three months. Read the expired DIMEX guide; do not assume an added payment makes every late renewal valid.

At the appointment

Bring the records required by your category, including the applicable CCSS and passport evidence. Review your name on the receipt before leaving and retain a copy. Ask how you will be notified about collection or delivery; the payment itself is not confirmation that a new card has been issued.
