Expediente Number: Your Guide to Costa Rica Immigration

An expediente is your immigration case file. Its number identifies the file when you check progress or discuss it with the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería (DGME). Keep it together with your application receipt and official correspondence.

How the expediente number is organized

The notice on DGME’s Consulta de Expedientes page explains two parts separated by a hyphen. The first is the Puesto, identifying where the procedure was started. The second is the consecutivo, the sequential identifier for the file.

The enquiry form labels these fields Puesto Migratorio and Número de Expediente. Copy the details from your own receipt. Do not assume that a passport number, DIMEX number or appointment reference belongs in either field.

Where to find your file reference

Check the receipt and correspondence issued for your application. If someone submitted it for you, ask for complete copies of the submission record and any notices received. If you cannot identify the number, ask DGME or the person assisting with your file to clarify it.

Record the reference exactly as shown. Keep a readable scan and store the original documents securely. Include dates alongside your notes so you can distinguish the submission receipt from later requests or decisions.

Use it to check the application

Choose Expedientes in the DGME online services menu, enter the two requested parts and complete the security check. Our step-by-step status-checking guide explains the process.

The menu also has separate DIMEX and renewal-charge enquiries. Choose the service for the question you are asking. A case-file lookup and a residence-card enquiry are different tasks.

A number is not the same as an approval decision

Do not treat possession of a reference number as an answer to every question about residence, work, travel or permitted stay. Read the official documents for your case and obtain clarification where needed. This article does not establish an individual’s immigration status.

Ask DGME about your actual circumstances before making a decision that depends on immigration permission.

If the number does not return a result

Compare each digit with your receipt and check that the two parts are entered in the correct fields. If the service is unavailable, try again later. A missing result alone is not proof that your application was approved, rejected or cancelled.

The official page lists 1311 for citizen enquiries and (506) 2299-8100 as the central telephone number. Use the current contact information on DGME’s website and have your receipt and the exact error or message ready.

Keep a useful record while the application is pending

• Retain the submission receipt, file reference and copies of documents provided.
• Save official requests, notifications and resolutions with their dates.
• Follow the instructions and deadlines in correspondence addressed to your case.
• Record enquiries and any instructions received.
• Protect your personal details when sharing documents or screenshots.

A file number does not provide a guaranteed processing date. For documents, fees or later documentation steps, use the current instructions for your category and the directions in your own case. Avoid applying an old universal checklist to every applicant.
