Pensionado (Retiree) Residency

The Pensionado program is ideal for retirees with a stable pension income. This popular option provides a straightforward path to legal residency for those enjoying their retirement years in Costa Rica.

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum guaranteed monthly income of $1,000 USD from a qualifying pension source
  • Income must be permanent and stable (government pensions preferred)
  • Proof of income through an official certification letter
  • Valid for 2 years, renewable with continued proof of pension

The Pensionado category allows you to include your spouse and dependent children under 18 as part of your application. While you cannot work as an employee in Costa Rica under this status, you can own a business and receive dividends.

Rentista (Income Earner) Residency

The Rentista program caters to those with stable non-employment income. This option has been recently updated to provide more flexibility for applicants.

Two Qualification Methods:

Option 1: Bank Deposit Method

  • Deposit $60,000 USD in a Costa Rican bank account
  • Arrange for monthly withdrawals of $2,500 over 24 months

  • Prove a guaranteed monthly income of at least $2,500 USD
  • Income must be stable and guaranteed for at least 2 years
  • Can come from investments, rental properties, or other passive sources

Inversionista (Investor) Residency

The Investor category is designed for those making significant investments in Costa Rica. This option has recently become more accessible with a reduced investment threshold.

    Dear Johanna Alvarez:

Your services have been recommended for me to engage in the process of obtaining a Retiree Pension Pensionado Visa for living in Costa Rica. Presently, I am here with a 180 day Tourist Visa and will be returning to the States on September 11, 2025 for its renewal.

I am facing somewhat of a tight deadline for using two documents that I have with me. They are: 1.) A Certification of Birth issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on February 24, 2025. The six-month expiration date for it will be August 24, 2025. 2.) A Federal Bureau of Investigation, Criminal Justice Information Services Division that was issued on February 11, 2025.

Knowing how busy you must be, I will finish this Comment by stating that I am sincere about my desire to become a Retiree Pensionado. It was my hope to have done this during the 18 months that I lived (May 2018 through October 2019) in Ciudad Colon and Brazil de Mora, however, the source that I engaged for doing the paper work was less than honest. Plus, at that time, I needed some Medical Attention did not have access to Caja.
