Retirement in Costa Rica

Retirement in Costa Rica works best when the location, household budget and everyday routine fit your needs. A pleasant holiday is a useful introduction, but it does not answer every question about living there throughout the year.

This guide is a practical planning framework, not a national price survey, investment recommendation or guarantee of lower costs. Reviewed 7 September 2026.

Start with an ordinary week

Write down the services, activities and relationships you want in everyday life. Consider grocery trips, transport, internet, language, visitors, hobbies and proximity to care. Test those routines during a stay instead of judging a community only by its restaurants and scenery.

Compare more than one home and neighborhood. Ask about noise, access roads, rain, heat, humidity and maintenance. The places-to-retire guide provides questions for comparing locations without declaring one town best for everyone.

Build a complete retirement budget

Separate one-time moving expenses from recurring bills. Obtain current housing and service quotes, note their dates and keep the same assumptions when comparing alternatives. A furnished holiday rental and a long-term unfurnished home are not equivalent price samples.

  • Housing, deposits, repairs and responsibilities under the lease.
  • Food, utilities, communications and the transport you actually use.
  • Healthcare arrangements, medicines and travel to appointments.
  • Document preparation, immigration fees and any professional assistance.
  • Travel to visit family and a reserve for unexpected expenses.

Use the household-budget guide to organize your own figures. Do not treat an immigration income threshold as an all-inclusive retirement budget. Ask appropriately qualified advisers about tax, pension and investment questions that depend on your circumstances.

Verify the immigration route

Retirement plans and immigration eligibility are separate decisions. DGME publishes the requirements for Pensionado, Rentista, investor and family categories in its official regularization guidance. Review the complete category, including documentary evidence and any dependent requirements.

Our Pensionado checklist explains the lifetime-pension route. Other forms of savings or income should not be assumed to qualify as a pension. Follow the applicable approval and documentation instructions rather than assuming an application immediately produces a resident card.

Plan healthcare around the actual location

Identify the care and medications you use and ask the relevant providers and insurers how continuity would work. Check the journey from your proposed home, appointment arrangements, coverage and written charges. A country’s general reputation does not establish the suitability of a particular service.

Use our healthcare guide and Caja registration guide to prepare questions. Confirm eligibility and enrollment with the responsible institution before relying on coverage.

Build a community and allow for adjustment

Make time to meet neighbors, practice Spanish and join activities you enjoy. Keep contact with people at home while building relationships locally. Ask organizers for current event details instead of planning around an old listing.

Compare the appealing parts of the move with the adjustments it requires. Our guide to expectations and reasons a move may not fit helps turn broad concerns into practical questions.

Make a staged decision

Start with research, then a trial stay and a written plan. Keep room to change the location or timing if your budget, family or care needs change. Avoid irreversible commitments based solely on promotional claims about cheap housing, guaranteed savings or improved health.

Contact CRIE to discuss the residency part of your retirement plans. DGME determines immigration requirements and decisions; other financial and healthcare questions belong with the relevant qualified providers.
