When choosing immigration help in Costa Rica, confirm who will do the work, what qualifications they hold and exactly what the service includes. Administrative support, legal advice and notarial acts are different tasks. A clear written agreement helps you compare providers and understand the charges.
Check the professional responsible for your case
Ask for the lawyer’s full name and professional registration number. Use the Colegio de Abogados y Abogadas public directory to check the professional information rather than relying only on a website biography or recommendation.
For a notarial act, check the notary separately. The Dirección Nacional de Notariado explains how to verify authorization for a particular date through the events recorded in its public consultation service. Identify who will authorize the actual instrument.
How much do Costa Rican lawyers charge?
There is no useful single price for every legal matter. A consultation, immigration file, property transaction and court case involve different work. Ask the professional to identify the applicable fee basis, the services covered and any tariff provision used in the calculation. Compare written quotes for the same scope rather than comparing headline totals.
The Colegio publishes fee-tariff materials in its regulations directory and announced a fee-calculation module in November 2025. An estimate still needs to match the specific act, value and circumstances. An old tariff PDF or another client’s bill is not a reliable quotation for your case.
Separate professional fees from other expenses
- Professional work: advice, preparation, representation and follow-up expressly included in the agreement.
- Notarial acts: identify the notary, the act and the corresponding charge.
- Third-party expenses: translations, certificates, delivery and other separately arranged services.
- Official payments: request the purpose and payment evidence for government or registry charges.
- Taxes and additional work: ask whether applicable tax is included and what would trigger a revised quote.
For notarial services specifically, the DNN’s August 28, 2026 notice states that the authorizing notary must charge according to the official tariff and issue the receipt or electronic invoice personally. It distinguishes that responsibility from invoicing by a company or law firm.
What to ask before paying
Request a written scope explaining the initial payment, later milestones, included consultations and how changes will be authorized. Ask what happens if you withdraw, if more documents are needed or if the matter requires an appeal or a separate proceeding. Keep the agreement, invoices and payment receipts together.
For example, an immigration quote might include preparing and submitting an initial application while excluding translations or later proceedings. Confirm those boundaries explicitly; the word “complete” does not tell you which services are included.
Immigration advice must follow DGME requirements
Use the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería as the official source for residency requirements. Ask which category is being assessed and which current official checklist supports the document request. Your nationality, family circumstances and immigration history should be considered before ordering records.
Distinguish a provider’s preparation schedule from the government’s decision timeline. Ask how you will receive submission evidence, status updates and requests for additional information. A paid service should not be presented as a guarantee of government approval or a fixed decision date.
Keep your file understandable
Maintain a dated list of documents requested, documents supplied and unresolved questions. Ask who holds original records, how copies are protected and how your file will be returned or transferred if the engagement ends. For important discussions, arrange language assistance if needed.
