Costa Rican beer is more than a single brand. Imperial, Pilsen and Bavaria are useful names to recognize, but the best choice depends on the style you enjoy and the particular product available. Compare the label and serving size before comparing prices. This guide combines brand background with a practical way to budget for supermarket purchases and evenings out.
Imperial, Pilsen and Bavaria
FIFCO’s beer portfolio dates Imperial to 1924 and describes several versions, including Original, Silver and Light. It describes Pilsen as a lager in the traditional Pilsener style, with a more pronounced hop character. Bavaria is a family of products rather than one interchangeable flavour; read the exact variety on the bottle or can.
Those are producer descriptions, not an independent taste test. FIFCO calls Imperial its national-market leader, but that promotional statement is not a current independently verified market-share figure. Calling a beer iconic or familiar is also different from designating an official national beverage.
Local brands, imports and craft choices
A familiar brand name does not by itself establish where a particular bottle was brewed. Check the label for the producer, country of origin, volume and alcohol content. Imported and locally produced versions, special releases and different package sizes should not be treated as the same item.
For craft options, ask a brewery or venue for its current menu. Describe whether you prefer a lighter lager, a more bitter beer or something darker, and ask about the style rather than assuming every local product tastes alike. There is no single reliable price covering supermarkets, neighbourhood shops, hotels and bars. Record the actual date, location, product and package size when building a budget. - Compare the same brand and variety, then calculate the cost per can or bottle.
- Check the volume: a cheaper small container may cost more per litre.
- Confirm whether a discount requires a multipack, membership or particular payment method.
- Ask whether a returnable bottle has a separate deposit and how returns work.
- Keep supermarket purchases separate from restaurant spending in your budget.
