Public transport costs in Costa Rica depend on the route and service. Use the current regulated fare for buses, trains and licensed taxis, and a date-specific quote for shuttles or flights. Include the trip from your accommodation to the departure point, connections and the return journey in your budget.
Buses: check the route and its current fare
ARESEP publishes current bus fares. Search for the route and section you actually need; a national minimum or an old fare quoted in a travel article may not apply. Ask the operator for the departure terminal, timetable, reservation arrangements and luggage conditions.
Carry usable small-denomination colones where cash is needed, but buses are not universally cash-only. The Central Bank’s SINPE-TP system supports electronic fare payment on participating services. Check whether your bus has a working validator and whether your payment instrument is accepted.
For an intercity trip, confirm whether a service is direct or makes intermediate stops, and leave time for connections. Departure points and schedules are operator-specific. Do not assume that one ticket covers a transfer to another route.

Senior bus and urban-train discounts
ARESEP describes distance-based senior benefits using an age threshold of 65: short journeys up to the stated 25-kilometre threshold are free; longer qualifying journeys below 50 kilometres are charged at half fare, and journeys above 50 kilometres at three-quarters fare. Confirm the applicable route section, including boundary cases, with the published fare table.
Residency is not a prerequisite stated in ARESEP’s identification guidance. Its transport FAQ lists identity cards, residence cards, DIMEX and passports. Its official clarification says qualifying foreign seniors have the same rights. Carry accepted proof of age and identity rather than assuming a particular immigration status is required.
INCOFER trains
Check INCOFER for the current route, fare, departure station and service notices. A train journey can be useful when its timetable fits your plans, but it should not be treated as an all-day nationwide network. Verify the last return service and holiday arrangements before relying on it.
Use the fare for the relevant section instead of an old general price list. If a bus or taxi is needed at either end, add that cost and the transfer time. Check accessibility arrangements directly where assistance is needed.

Licensed taxis and airport transfers
ARESEP’s taxi tariff pages distinguish the initial charge, additional distance and delay charges. Rates differ by vehicle category and operating base, including airport services. Use the applicable current tariff rather than one national per-kilometre estimate.
Before leaving, confirm how the fare will be calculated and the accepted payment method. At an airport, use the airport’s official ground-transport information to locate authorized services. Do not assume that instructions for Juan Santamaría also apply at Liberia.
App-based rides and tourist shuttles
Check the actual pickup point, available cars, estimated price and cancellation terms when considering an app-based ride. Availability at one time or in one town is not a guarantee elsewhere. This guide does not establish the legal authorization of a particular platform or driver.
For a shuttle, request a quote for your date, passenger count and luggage. Confirm whether the price is per person or per vehicle, which hotels are served, whether changes of vehicle are involved and what happens if your arrival is delayed. Compare the complete door-to-door journey rather than assuming a shuttle always takes half the bus time.
Uber and DiDi in Costa Rica: availability and value
Uber and DiDi publish Costa Rica rider information, but that does not mean a car will be available at every address. Enter the actual pickup point and destination in the app shortly before the journey. Compare the displayed estimate, expected wait, payment method, cancellation terms and the plan for your return trip. This guide has not verified a current market-share ranking, so it does not label either service the country’s most popular or cheapest.
DiDi’s Costa Rica help page says its fare calculation can include time, distance, additional charges and dynamic pricing during high demand. Compare the complete trip with a licensed taxi or a prearranged transfer. For a flight or medical appointment, keep a backup rather than relying on a low estimate seen on a different day.
Is Uber available in Liberia?
Uber lists Liberia, Guanacaste in its own city information. That listing is evidence that the company offers an app-based service for the area; it is not a promise of a driver at a particular time, guaranteed airport pickup or a return journey from a distant beach.
Confirm the pickup instructions in the app and the airport’s own ground-transport rules. Do not confuse a city listing with authorization to collect passengers anywhere on airport property. If a pickup cannot be arranged at a permitted location, use an authorized airport service or a confirmed transfer. Check the return trip independently, especially for an early flight.
Is Uber safe in Costa Rica?
No app can guarantee an incident-free trip. Uber’s rider-safety information describes tools for sharing trip status. DiDi’s Costa Rica safety page describes driver and vehicle details, trip sharing and emergency features. These are the providers’ descriptions of their tools, not an independent comparison of accident or crime rates.
Before entering, match the driver, vehicle and plate with your booking. Wait in a suitable place, use a seat belt, share the trip with someone you trust and keep enough phone battery for the journey. Do not enter a vehicle that does not match the booking. Report problems through the platform; call 9-1-1 for an emergency. The availability of an app or its safety tools does not establish a driver’s legal operating authorization.
Uber and DiDi official rider pages checked September 8, 2026. Prices, service availability and app features can change.
Ferries: passengers and vehicles are separate
On Naviera Tambor’s Puntarenas–Paquera page, checked on 6 September 2026, the listed passenger fares were ₡810 for an adult, ₡480 for a child and zero for the senior category. The light-vehicle fare was ₡11,400 plus IVA. Confirm eligibility for the passenger category and current prices before buying.
The operator’s linked ticketing service explains that the vehicle ticket does not include the driver: include the driver in the passenger count. Online vehicle spaces are limited, with other spaces sold at the ticket office. Check the sailing, check-in requirements and booking conditions directly; these figures do not apply automatically to the Playa Naranjo route.

Domestic flights
Compare the airline’s fare for your actual travel date and route. SANSA’s destination information and baggage conditions are useful starting points. Confirm the airport or terminal, check-in time, included baggage and any excess charges.
Allow for ground transport and connection time at both ends. A flight can shorten some journeys, but advertised flying time is not the full door-to-door travel time.
Build your own monthly transport budget
List the trips you make each week, the current fare for every leg and how often you need a taxi or other backup. For example, two ₡600 bus journeys on each of 22 days would total ₡26,400; this is an arithmetic example, not a quoted route fare.
Before choosing a home without a car, test the journey to shops, healthcare and regular appointments. Check walking access, the final return service and rainy-day alternatives. A Central Valley address does not automatically guarantee convenience, and a coastal address does not automatically require car ownership.
Official regulator, Central Bank and operator sources checked on 6 September 2026. Fares, schedules and service conditions can change; confirm the journey before travelling.
