Distances are Google Maps driving routes from the airport, checked in October 2026, when weekday afternoon traffic put Jacó at just over 2 hours. The Costa Rican Tourism Board describes Jacó as about 1 hour 30 minutes from the capital. Starting from downtown San José adds the drive across the city. Add time for immigration, baggage and collecting a rental car before you set off.
What is the closest beach to San José?
By distance, Puntarenas, on the Gulf of Nicoya, and Playa Herradura and Jacó on the open Pacific are the nearest, all within a few kilometres of each other. Puntarenas is a port city with a long seaside promenade; Herradura and Jacó are beach towns with more for visitors. For swimming and a resort feel, most people choose Herradura or Jacó.

Puntarenas
Puntarenas is an old port city on a long sandspit, popular with Costa Rican families for its seaside promenade, the Paseo de los Turistas. It is also where ferries leave for the Nicoya Peninsula.
Playa Herradura
Just north of Jacó, Herradura is a calm, horseshoe-shaped bay with a marina, resorts and residential communities.
Jacó
Jacó is the Central Pacific’s busiest beach town, with surf schools, restaurants, nightlife and plenty of places to stay. Being close to a beach does not mean the water is safe for swimming, so check conditions and swim near lifeguards where possible.
Playa Mantas and Punta Leona
The Tourism Board’s nearby-destinations guide lists Playa Mantas among the beaches close to San José, next to Playa Blanca at Punta Leona. Confirm the correct access point and parking before you leave, because Costa Rica has more than one Playa Blanca.
Esterillos Oeste
A quieter stretch of coast south of Jacó, Esterillos Oeste has strong waves, so it suits beach walks and surfing more than easy swimming.
Quepos and Manuel Antonio
For a longer stay, Manuel Antonio combines a national park with beaches and jungle. The official tourism route guidance describes the route from SJO via Route 27 and Route 34 toward Quepos, then on to Manuel Antonio.
Plan the whole arrival day
- Flight arrival: allow for airport procedures before scheduling a fixed pickup or activity.
- Transport: confirm the pickup point, price, luggage space, child seats if needed and late-arrival arrangements.
- Road conditions: traffic, rain, roadworks and stops change the journey, so recheck the route before you leave.
- Late flights: consider a night near the airport rather than an unfamiliar drive in the dark.
- Return flight: work back from your airline’s check-in time and allow extra time on the road.

For the Central Pacific beaches, San José (SJO) is the better airport.
