For a beach stay after arriving at San José’s Juan Santamaría Airport (SJO), start by comparing the Central Pacific coast: Jacó, Herradura and Playa Mantas. Manuel Antonio is another option farther along the coast. The right choice depends on your exact accommodation, landing time and transport—not simply the nearest point on the shoreline.
Be careful with travel estimates advertised “from San José.” A trip from the capital is not the same as a trip from the airport. Immigration, baggage collection and collecting a rental car also happen before your road journey starts.

How long does it take to reach the beach?
The Costa Rican Tourism Board describes Jacó as about 1 hour 30 minutes from the capital. Its nearby-destinations guide gives Playa Mantas 1 hour 45 minutes and Esterillos Oeste 2 hours in its San José outing context. These are broad tourism estimates, not current SJO-to-hotel transfer times.
For an airport departure, enter Juan Santamaría International Airport as the starting point and your accommodation as the destination in a live route planner. Check both driving distance and estimated duration. Confirm the arrival-day estimate with your transfer provider, including any collection delay and stops.
Beach areas to compare
Jacó and Herradura
The official Central Pacific attractions guide describes Jacó and nearby coastal attractions. Compare the actual neighborhood and accommodation access rather than treating every property in this area as the same journey. Being close to a beach does not establish that the water is safe for swimming.
Playa Mantas and Punta Leona
ICT lists Playa Mantas among beaches close to San José and places it beside Playa Blanca at Punta Leona. Confirm the correct access point, parking arrangements and the last part of the route before leaving. Costa Rica has more than one Playa Blanca, so a beach name alone is not enough for navigation.
Esterillos Oeste
ICT includes Esterillos Oeste in its San José getaway guide. It describes strong waves, so choose it for the setting and activities that suit you rather than assuming every beach is an easy swimming stop. Check local conditions on arrival.
Quepos and Manuel Antonio
For a longer coastal stay, compare Quepos and Manuel Antonio using your exact lodging address. The official tourism route guidance describes travel from SJO via Route 27 and Route 34 toward Quepos, then onward to Manuel Antonio. Its distances for individual road sections are not a complete airport-to-hotel distance.

Plan the whole arrival day
- Flight arrival: allow for airport procedures before scheduling a fixed pickup or activity.
- Transport: confirm the pickup point, price, luggage capacity, child seats if needed and any late-arrival arrangements.
- Road conditions: traffic, rain, roadworks and stops can change the journey. Recheck the route before departure.
- Late flights: consider an airport-area overnight stay if you would be tired or unfamiliar with the route.
- Return flight: work backward from your airline’s check-in instructions and allow a separate road buffer.
The airport’s transportation page is a starting point for official ground-transport information. Confirm current arrangements directly with the provider.

Which beach is closest?
A reliable answer requires a defined destination and current road route. Compare a named beach access point or hotel, not a straight-line distance. This guide gives a practical shortlist rather than an unverified “closest beach” ranking.
Should you fly into San José or Liberia?
The Costa Rican Tourism Board identifies Juan Santamaría (SJO) in Alajuela and Daniel Oduber (LIR), also called Guanacaste Airport, as the two airport options in its international-flight guide. Match your arrival airport to the whole itinerary, not only the cheapest airfare.
- San José and Central Pacific plans: compare SJO flights with the beach routes above and the journey to your first overnight stop.
- Guanacaste plans: include LIR in your comparison and check our Liberia airport beach-transfer guide.
- A trip covering several regions: price both round-trip and different-airport arrival/departure options. Include any rental-car drop-off charge or additional transfer.
For each option, add airfare, baggage, ground transport and any overnight accommodation needed after a late arrival. Compare the door-to-door schedule and return-flight buffer as well as the total price. Neither airport is automatically the best choice for every traveler.

Choosing an airport for a longer stay
If your trip focuses on Guanacaste, also compare beach access from Liberia airport. For a move, airport convenience is only one consideration: compare everyday transport, services and your preferred community before choosing where to live.
